2nd Annual Wine Tasting Gala presented by 84 Lumber
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Wine Tasting Gala presented by 84 Lumber on Monday, January 14, 2013 at CONSOL Energy Center. Celebrate a variety of California wines, sample hors d’oeuvres and bid on exclusive auction items while mingling with Pittsburgh personalities.
SKATES & PLATES CHARITY GALA Presented by TRIB TOTAL MEDIA
Since 1986, the Penguins have hosted an annual charity gala for the benefit of local children's charities raising over $5 million for medical research.
In 2009, the Penguins re-organized the team's gala and hosted its signature event, the Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media, to benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Mario Lemieux Foundation and Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Penguins' players don tuxedos and pass plates instead of pucks as they greet guests and serve as waiters for the evening. Top tip honors and bragging rights are captured by a different Penguins' player each season.
Along with dinner, the event features silent and live auctions. Prizes are also awarded to guests for the top tips collected by the players.
PENGUINS CHARITY AUCTION ON ROOT SPORTS - MARCH 26, 2013
The Pittsburgh Penguins are partnering with ROOT Sports for the Penguins Charity Auction on ROOT Sports. The event features two components: the online auction and the Penguins Auction Prize Bags, which will be on sale for $250 during tonight's Penguins game vs. Montreal beginning at 6:00pm.
All proceeds benefit the cancer research projects of the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the youth charities of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.
A total of 2,200 Penguins Auction Prize Bags will be available for purchase while supplies last - 2,000 online at www.pittsburghpenguins.com, and 200 at CONSOL Energy Center for ticket holders.

OPEN PRACTICE
Since 2010, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation have presented the Open Hockey Practice at CONSOL Energy Center. The event offers a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students, in grades one through eight, from across Allegheny County to see the Penguins at work. Students are entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-the-scenes aspects of the team and facility. Students are given the opportunity to ask questions of the players and coaches during and after practice. The whole event incorporates educational themes (math, geography, etc.) and everyone is given an activity book focused on education, health and nutrition to take home with them.
FREE GAME FOR KIDS
Since the 2010-2011 season, the Penguins' Free Game for Kids provides a unique experience for our area's youth to attend a game. The Penguins' Free Game for Kids has given 36,000 of our youngest fans the chance attend a game for free! The genesis for the program came from a desire to give the team's young and growing fan base the opportunity to enjoy a game at the new CONSOL Energy Center. The Free Game for Kids was created as a way to thank our young fan base which is, and continues to be, an integral part of our success.
HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER
October heralds a flurry of things — cooler temperatures as autumn marches forward, leaves change colors, the NHL regular season begins and the color purple washes through the National Hockey League. Wait. . . purple? Fans probably notice that their favorite team's normal colors include a lavender accent as the NHL continues its annual Hockey Fights Cancer campaign throughout October. This league-wide initiative includes numerous activities that involve all member clubs, players, management and fans — as well as the creation of Hockey Fights Cancer-themed merchandise — all with the goal of raising awareness and funds for this important cause.
Members of the Penguins organization also wear specially designed Hockey Fights Cancer silk ties. Pittsburgh Penguins' players sport the ties pre- and post-game while Pens' management, executives, coaches and team broadcasters wear the ties throughout the game. Team owner and Penguins great Mario Lemieux leads the Penguins Alumni Association as he proudly displays the Hockey Fights Cancer tie as well. The Penguins Ice Crew wear Hockey Fights Cancer apparel to showcase the special merchandise that is available for purchase in the PensGear Store and wrap their shovels and pails in the signature lavender color.
SUMMER STICKS presented by Reed Smith
Every autumn, the Pittsburgh Penguins host a golf tournament and spend a day on the links for charity. The 25th Annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic was held on September 20, 2012 at Allegheny Country Club. The tournament is one of the organization’s signature events and is greatly anticipated as the last hoorah of the summer.
The scramble-style tournament features teams of three, each accompanied by a Penguins’ celebrity captain. The teams compete for tournament prizes. All enjoy the sunshine, fresh air and a wonderful day of golf. Proceeds from this event benefits the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.
CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL VISIT
A team tradition since the 1970s, Penguins players and team mascot, Iceburgh, make an annual visit to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
There are lots of smiles as players visit each floor of the hospital, greet patients and their families, sign autographs and distribute a variety of team memorabilia.
After the room-to-room visits, players join patients in the hospital playrooms for fun and laughter with a variety of tabletop games and activities.
A new tradition has begun as players from the Penguins developmental camp visit the kids at Children’s.
PROJECT BUNDLE UP
Each year, the entire Penguins team participates in The Salvation Army’s Project Bundle Up program with a team shopping spree at a local mall after practice.
Penguins’ players are matched with local middle school children selected by The Salvation Army to shop for new winter clothing including coats, hats, scarves, gloves and boots.
Prior to shopping, the children and players enjoy a catered lunch together. When all the shopping has concluded and the children’s winter outfits are complete, the children collect autographs and pose for pictures with their new friends before returning to their afternoon classes at school.
Penguins’ corporate partners Dick’s Sporting Goods and T.G.I. Friday’s have joined forces with the Penguins for this event.
CHILDREN’S CHARITIES PRACTICE & LUNCHEON
Each year, the team invites children battling illness or great difficulties and their families to a special practice session and team luncheon. Children and their immediate families from The Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Children’s Institute and The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center attend the event and are delighted to mingle with the team off the ice. There are smiles at every table as the players and coaches join the families for lunch. After lunch, the team sign autographs, take photos and greet family members. Each child also receives a gift bag filled with Penguins’ mementos and gifts.
PENS & PINS
In 2009, the Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Association created Pens & Pins, a charity bowling tournament to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater Pennsylvania & Southern West Virginia. The tournament features Penguins players serving as celebrity team captains for each competing bowling team. Bowlers have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and purchase mystery pucks and homemade baked goods provided by the team’s wives and girlfriends.
Fans attending this event have the opportunity to join in the fun and help make wishes come true for many Pittsburgh area children.
CROSBY & MALKIN CHARITY SUITES
Illustrating the saying that “charity starts at home,” Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have made two luxury suites at their home rink – the CONSOL Energy Center – into a special place to give local youth undergoing challenges an opportunity to enjoy the excitement of NHL hockey at a Penguins game.
Each player hosts more than twenty different charitable organizations - each with an emphasis on children who are coping with difficult health, economic or family challenges – during the Penguins regular season. Their guests enjoy watching Penguins games from the best seats in the building and each child receives a special gift bag filled with special items that are compliments of Sidney and Geno!
TOYS FOR TOTS
Each season, fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy or make a cash donation to help purchase toys for underprivileged children in the Pittsburgh area when the Penguins host toy drives at two consecutive home games.
The Penguins Wives Association and Penguins Booster Club join forces with the U.S. Marine Corps at CONSOL Energy Center gates for the benefit of the Toys For Tots program. Following these collections, the Marines distribute the toys or use the monetary contributions to purchase additional toys for needy children in the community and deliver a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters.
Since 1992, Penguins fans have donated over 20,575 toys and $55,050 at the team’s annual toy drives.
Fans React as Penguins “Score Against Hunger”
Penguins' fans reached into their wallets and shopping carts with overwhelming generosity for the team’s 22nd annual “Score Against Hunger” food drive on Friday, February 22.
A total of 1,835 pounds of food and $2,837 in cash donations were collected at the game for the benefit of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Penguins’ fans were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the game or to make a cash donation to help feed the hungry at local community shelters and food pantries where the need for food has increased tremendously over the past few years.
Fans making donations were eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia during the game.
Since 1992, Penguins fans have donated over 35,000 pounds of food and over $31,000 at the team’s “Score Against Hunger” drives.
Penguins Fans Donate Children’s Books
Before the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers game on Saturday, March 16, the Penguins and FirstEnergy Solutions, the Official Energy Provider of CONSOL Energy Center and the Pittsburgh Penguins, partnered for the team’s fifth annual Children’s Book Collection.
Pens fans were encouraged to share their love of children’s literature by donating a new or gently used book, or making a monetary contribution, for the benefit of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The books will be distributed to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh branches and used for summer reading programs to foster a love of reading in children of all ages. All money donated will be used by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh to purchase additional, new books.
The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh serves citizens of Allegheny County throughout 19 neighborhood locations. The library promotes literacy in the community and inspires a lifelong appreciation for learning.
The Penguins Wives Association and Booster Club helped to make this event a great success as they accepted more than 1,135 books at CONSOL Energy Center gates. Fan contributions and a generous gift of $5,000 from FirstEnergy Solutions helped raise more than $5,960 this year.
Since 2009, Penguins fans with an assist from FirstEnergy Solutions have enabled us to donate over 8,370 books and $9,980 to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.
We thank our fans for their outstanding support!
Penguins Fans Provide A Huge Assist For The Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Walgreens partnered to host the team’s second pet supplies collection before the Penguins-Rangers game at CONSOL Energy Center on Friday, April 5 and Penguins fans provided a huge assist to help their four-legged friends.
The pet supplies collection benefitted the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and donations of pet toys, treats, dry kitten or puppy food abounded. Fans also made monetary donations to help the Animal Rescue League continue their mission to assist animals in our area.
The Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center strives to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention and comfort to all abandoned, neglected and injured animals brought to them by the community; to restore lost animals to their owners or seek new homes for them, and educate the public about humane care of animals with a goal of reducing overpopulation.
They also work to rehabilitate and release injured and orphaned wildlife and to provide educational programs to regional residents to help foster an appreciation for conservation and a harmonious existence between humans and wildlife.
The Penguins Wives Association, Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club, and representatives from the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center accepted more than 710 pet supplies and $2,225 from fans.
Penguins partner Walgreens also committed its resources to ensure that the pet supplies collection would be a resounding success by accepting donations at Walgreens stores in the western Pennsylvania region, as well as stores in Ohio and West Virginia. Walgreens shoppers and Penguins fans were able to donate pet supplies until April 13.
The Pittsburgh Penguins would like to thank each fan and animal lover who contributed to our pet supplies collection at CONSOL Energy Center or a local Walgreens store. It is with your support that we can help the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center continue to care for our furry friends and we applaud your generosity.
BEARD-A-THON
The Beard-A-Thon campaign encourages fans to “grow one for the team” for the duration of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and have their friends, family and business associates pledge them. Fans that are unable to or unwilling to grow a playoff beard could also pledge their favorite NHL player or build a virtual playoff beard on the website. Proceeds from the Beard-A-Thon benefit the Mario Lemieux Foundation.
BLOOD DRIVE
Since 1992, the Pittsburgh Penguins have hosted an annual blood drive in an effort to save lives. Every two seconds, someone in the United States is in need of blood and more than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day. Through the Score One for Life Blood Drive, the Pittsburgh Penguins and American Red Cross are able to assist people in great need.
We are proud to serve our community and help provide the gift of life in such a worthwhile endeavor.
PENGUINS SUPPORT THE UNITED WAY
The Pittsburgh Penguins have partnered with Highmark to make a $25,000 contribution to the local chapter of the United Way. Highmark employees serve as volunteers at CONSOL Energy Center gates prior to Penguins games to pass out promotional items as fans enter the building.
To support the United Way’s host of social service programs and as an expression of appreciation to Highmark employees, the Penguins organization then presents a donation check to the United Way agency.
NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION
Members of the Penguins visit classrooms to read to the children as a part of the Trib Total Media’s Newspapers In Education program. Players answer questions about their education and personal hobbies while emphasizing the importance of school and reading.
STUDENTS FOR STANLEY
The Pittsburgh Penguins have an extensive community outreach program with an emphasis on youth and education. The Penguins have added a new dimension to their community outreach program with promotions geared toward schools within Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh.
During the season and playoff race, the Penguins give local elementary, middle and intermediate schools an opportunity to win prizes benefiting their school or for individual students when they enter art, essay or video contests.
The contests are a unique way to motivate students through an interest in hockey and foster closer ties within the Penguins local community through education.
OPERATION SHOEBOX
Since 2007, the Pittsburgh Penguins staff has brightened seniors’ holidays with Operation Shoebox. Staff members from all departments of the Penguins’ organization donate beautifully wrapped Christmas gifts for the senior residents of local assisted living communities. Before Christmas, the Penguins front office staff then visits the assisted living facility to distribute the gifts to those residents.
THANKSGIVING TURKEYS
Since 2007, Penguins players have visited Pittsburgh’s Hill District to help the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distribute food to residents in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Money collected from the Penguins’ annual Score Against Hunger Food Drive helps purchase the food that the players pass out and gives disadvantaged people the “fixings” to make a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN
Nearly 29 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a broad array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing, and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children.
Each season, the Pittsburgh Penguins assist The Salvation Army through donations of autographed memorabilia and an in-game collection. Volunteers from The Salvation Army set up their iconic red kettles inside at the gates of CONSOL Energy Center and accept monetary donations of any amount before a December home game.
HOLIDAY ORNAMENT
Each year, a donation to the Autism Society of Pittsburgh is made when the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Booster Club and Wendell August Forge join forces to sell specially designed bronze and copper holiday ornaments. The ornament set is created by the artisans at Wendell August Forge specifically for this charity project and sold during Penguins home games. The Penguins also auction ornaments online with each ornament featuring a Penguins’ player or coach autograph.
PENGUINS & PAWS PET CALEDAR
Prior to the holidays, the Pittsburgh Penguins produce the Penguins & Paws Calendar for the benefit of the Animal Rescue League and Wildlife Center. The perfect stocking stuffer, the calendar features photos of Penguins players in a casual atmosphere, posing with their family pets or animals from the Animal Rescue League.

MILITARY APPRECIATION
The Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to support our military veterans and honor their service to our country.
On Veterans Day 2012, the Penguins hosted 12 wounded military veterans at their Friday morning skate to honor them for their sacrifices.
The veterans, who represented the Wounded Warrior Project, Operation Troop Appreciation and the Veterans’ Administration, each received an individualized Penguins jersey from a Penguins player before the morning skate. They then watched the practice from Suite 66 and, as an added bonus, received a visit from Penguins owner and legend Mario Lemieux.
Military veterans were the focus of the November 11 game as special guests of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in suites purchased by each player. Veterans also took part in Zamboni rides before the game and during intermissions to great applause from fans.
Penguins players wore special camouflage jerseys to honor the veterans and current troops during their pre-game warm-up on November 11. The players then autographed the jerseys and the team auctioned them off online with proceeds benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project and Operation Troop Appreciation.
All fans who attended the Veterans Day game received an American Flag Foundation wristband, presented by PNC, and had an opportunity to donate to the “Support Our Heroes” program as members of the ROTC collected donations at arena gates.

June 7, 2011 - Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ray Shero has made a video to support the free baseline concussion testing program, "Heads Up Pittsburgh," offered by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.
The first-of-its kind program for youth hockey players hits home for Shero because his 15-year-old son, Chris, suffered a concussion this season.
Here is a link to the video: http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=565128
Free testing is available this summer to youth hockey players in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), as well as others registered locally through USA Hockey Programs.
Players were emailed a password by USA Hockey which enables them to register for testing at www.upmc.com/hockeytesting. Registration is ongoing.
Testing is being conducted at The UPMC Sports Medicine Center on the South Side, and at five Community College of Allegheny County locations - Allegheny, Boyce, North and South campuses and West Hills Center.
For more information on the "Heads Up Pittsburgh" program, please visit www.pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org.
April 13, 2011 - The generosity of Pittsburgh Penguins fans came through again Wednesday night when they donated $15,560 to benefit wounded police officer James Kuzak.
Officer Kuzak, a 15-year police veteran, was shot three times April 4 while answering an emergency call about a home invasion in Clairton. He is hospitalized in critical condition and still faces multiple surgeries.
Officers from the Clairton Police Department and other local police units held the collection before the Penguins' playoff opener at CONSOL Energy Center.
Donations also may be sent to the James Kuzak Benefit Fund, P.O. Box 225, Clairton, PA 15025, or made in person at any PNC Bank office.
April 12, 2011 - Members of the Clairton Police Department and other local police officers will hold a collection to benefit wounded officer James Kuzak before the Penguins' first playoff game Wednesday night at CONSOL Energy Center.
Officer Kuzak, a 15-year police veteran, was shot three times April 4 while answering an emergency call about a home invasion in Clairton. He is hospitalized in critical condition and still faces multiple surgeries.
"Officer Kuzak put himself in harm's way to protect a family and their two small children," said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. "His fellow officers and friends are trying to do what they can to help Jim and his family during this difficult time, and the Penguins are proud to cooperate with this collection."
Officers will be located inside CONSOL Energy Center gates before the Penguins' 7 p.m. game with the Tampa Bay Lightning Wednesday.
Donations also may be sent to the James Kuzak Benefit Fund, P.O. Box 225, Clairton, PA 15025, or made in person at any PNC Bank office.
April 5, 2011 - The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine are teaming up on a first-of-its-kind initiative - "Heads Up Pittsburgh" - to offer free baseline concussion testing and educational programs to youth hockey players in the Pittsburgh region.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) also are playing key roles in this unique program to enhance the safety of local youth hockey through concussion education and awareness among players and their families.
Free testing will be available to youth players in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), as well as others registered locally through USA Hockey programs. "Heads Up Pittsburgh" is being funded by the Penguins Foundation.
The tests will be conducted starting May 1 at The UPMC Sports Medicine Center on the South Side. An expanded schedule of testing will be available starting in June at any of five Community College of Allegheny County locations - Allegheny, Boyce, North and South campuses and West Hills Center. Up to 20 players can be tested at the same time. Players will be emailed a password by USA Hockey which will enable them to pre-register for testing at www.upmc.com/hockeytesting.
"This is the first major initiative of the new Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and we are very proud that it focuses on the health, safety and education of thousands of local youth hockey players," said Dave Soltesz, president of the Foundation.
"We held a dry-land training program for youth hockey with UPMC Sports Medicine back in October and began discussing the possibility of a concussion-specific program at that time. It's a testament to UPMC's expertise and commitment to the youth of our region that everything has come together so quickly. We'll be able to begin this program in May and have thousands of players tested heading into the next hockey season."
The UPMC Sports Concussion Program, a credentialed ImPACT testing partner, will use a 30-minute test that evaluates and documents multiple aspects of neurocognitive functioning -- including memory, brain processing speed, reaction time, post-concussive symptoms and an injury-documentation system. All NHL players undergo such a test. The baseline test is then used for a comparison if a player suffers a concussion and to help inform return to play decisions made by health care professionals.
"UPMC Sports Medicine is very excited to expand its relationship with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation to offer baseline concussion testing to the hockey players of western Pennsylvania. Combining the expertise of these organizations to improve the safety of our youth hockey players is an initiative we a proud to be a part of," commented Dr. Brian F. Hagen, UPMC Sports Medicine.
"This time of year, about 20 percent of our concussion clinic patients are youth hockey players - both boys and girls," said Dr. Micky Collins, of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program. "I applaud the Penguins Foundation and the CDC for establishing this program with us."
Soltesz said the program will be focused on the pee wee, bantam and midget levels of youth hockey, in addition to high school hockey, because those players are involved in body-checking. "This represents 6,000 players in those age groups in Western Pennsylvania, and our goal is to test all of them," Soltesz said.
"CCAC is proud to expand our service to the community with the Penguins Foundation and UPMC as part of this important initiative," said Alex Johnson, CCAC president. "The ‘Heads Up Pittsburgh' program will enable young athletes to receive this advanced screening at convenient locations throughout the Allegheny County."
While players are being tested, their parents will meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about "Heads Up Pittsburgh" and receive educational materials provided by the CDC.
The goal is to offer a comprehensive program to help get concussion information into the hands of coaches, referees, parents and school and health-care professionals who are on the front line to help identify and respond appropriately to concussions among young athletes.

Over the next three years, the program will encompass over 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties and will benefit over 187,000 students.
This year, over 250 qualifying schools in Allegheny County will receive free all-inclusive sets of floor hockey equipment. In addition to equipment, the Foundation will supply everything that a school needs to sustain a quality floor hockey program including student work books, instruction manuals and a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for each of the school’s physical education teachers, hosted by the Penguins coaching staff and members of the team’s alumni.
In the second year of the program, schools will be added from the surrounding counties.
Each set of equipment retails for over $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and storage bag. The program will also provide teacher training, instruction and supplemental materials for the schools.
“We’re in tough budget times across the state and this kind of contribution really makes a difference,” stated Dr. Dorothy Stark, Principal in the Bethel Park School District.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is committed to encouraging children to embrace physical activity through the PensFIT program. In recent years, childhood obesity has skyrocketed among America’s youth. The PensFIT initiative is geared towards reinforcing to students the importance of exercising and developing a commitment to lifelong physical activity.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground who will provide the shipping of all equipment to the schools free of charge.
Pens Foundation, Highmark Team Up
To Build 12 Dek Hockey Rinks in City, County
PITTSBURGH--The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have teamed up with the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County on a $2.1 million project to build 12 community dek hockey rinks over the next four years.
Known as “Project Power Play,” the program will place four dek hockey rinks in the City and eight others in the County and surrounding communities. The rinks also may be used for other sports such as soccer and lacrosse.
Highmark is leading the effort with $1.5 million in funding, and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is contributing $600,000. The City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and other support.
The first rink has been completed at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue in the City. Pittsburgh Penguins CEO David Morehouse, Highmark Executive Vice President, Chief External Affairs and Communications Officer Dan Onorato and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl were on hand to officially open the Banksville rink today.
A second Project Power Play rink is under construction now at Lewis Park in Hazelwood, adjacent to the Hazelwood YMCA.
The rinks are “multi-sport courts” measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. The facilities include a premier dasherboard system, players’ benches, a penalty box, goals at each end and start-up dek hockey equipment.
One site already selected for next year is Brookline. Other sites will be chosen on factors such as a community’s need for this type of facility and a commitment to develop programming.
Citiparks and local athletic associations will program the Banksville and Lewis Park rinks, with assistance from the Penguins.
“Our mission with the Penguins Foundation is to create opportunities for our youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship,” the Penguins’ Morehouse said. “Thanks to the significant financial contribution from Highmark and the enthusiastic support of the Mayor, we’re excited to open the Banksville rink today. It is the start of a great collaborative effort with Highmark, the City and the County on a tremendous program.”
“At Highmark, we aim to create healthy communities,” said Onorato. “Project Power Play gives area youth a venue where they can get out and get active, ultimately, leading to better health in our local communities.”
"This collaborative partnership is a perfect example of why Pittsburgh's quality of life continues to improve," Ravenstahl said. "We're thrilled to be cutting the ribbon on another recreational amenity that will be enjoyed by our young people for years to come. I want to thank the Penguins and Highmark for their dedication to the Pittsburgh region and I commit that we will do our part to make this one of a kind partnership a great success."
Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Online Auction Raises Over $53,000 for The One Fund Boston Efforts
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has raised more than $53,000 for The One Fund Boston to benefit victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy, the foundation announced today.
The money was raised through an online auction of Penguins jerseys from the game against the Boston Bruins on April 20. Each jersey featured a “617” commemorative patch – representing the city of Boston area code.
The One Fund was established by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to raise funds to assist those families most affected by the tragic events at the Boston Marathon. Immediately after the Fund was created, the Penguins Foundation collaborated with the Boston Bruins Foundation to hold separate auctions benefitting the cause.
Fans across North America supported the initiative with online bids. The auction ran from April 22 through May 13. All proceeds directly benefit The One Fund Boston.
