HEADS UP

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine teamed up on a first-of-its-kind initiative — HEADS UP Pittsburgh.

HEADS UP Pittsburgh events and educational training sessions emphasize learning concussion signs and symptoms, the steps to take if an athlete has a suspected concussion and the importance of athletes taking time to recover.

The program kicked off in 2011 and included free baseline concussion testing for youth hockey players in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), as well as others registered locally through USA Hockey programs. 2,300 youth hockey players were tested in 2011.

This year, in an effort to expand the program, testing was opened up to local youth athletes in other sports. Since the program began, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested, along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports.

Our thanks to the CDC and Community College of Allegheny County for playing key roles in this unique program, which enhances the safety of local youth hockey and promotes concussion awareness among players and their families.

Pens Foundation, Highmark Team Up
To Build 12 Dek Hockey Rinks in City, County

PITTSBURGH--The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have teamed up with the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County on a $2.1 million project to build 12 community dek hockey rinks over the next four years.

Known as "Project Power Play," the program will place four dek hockey rinks in the City and eight others in the County and surrounding communities. The rinks also may be used for other sports such as soccer and lacrosse.

Highmark is leading the effort with $1.5 million in funding, and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is contributing $600,000. The City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are providing the land as well as maintenance services, lighting and other support.

The first rink has been completed at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue in the City. Pittsburgh Penguins CEO David Morehouse, Highmark Executive Vice President, Chief External Affairs and Communications Officer Dan Onorato and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl were on hand to officially open the Banksville rink today.

A second Project Power Play rink is under construction now at Lewis Park in Hazelwood, adjacent to the Hazelwood YMCA.

The rinks are "multi-sport courts" measuring 155 feet by 75 feet. The facilities include a premier dasherboard system, players' benches, a penalty box, goals at each end and start-up dek hockey equipment.

One site already selected for next year is Brookline. Other sites will be chosen on factors such as a community's need for this type of facility and a commitment to develop programming.

Citiparks and local athletic associations will program the Banksville and Lewis Park rinks, with assistance from the Penguins.

"Our mission with the Penguins Foundation is to create opportunities for our youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship," the Penguins' Morehouse said. "Thanks to the significant financial contribution from Highmark and the enthusiastic support of the Mayor, we're excited to open the Banksville rink today. It is the start of a great collaborative effort with Highmark, the City and the County on a tremendous program."

PROJECT POWER PLAY

In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America's youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer Project Power Play to promote fun, organized physical activity. Project Power Play is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to newly constructed, outdoor, multi-use athletic facilities. These structures provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations.

THE PLAN
Our 3-year plan entails the construction of 12 facilities. The selection of the sites is carefully planned taking into consideration need, utilization, supervision and location. Prime consideration for placement is in local city/county parks or adjacent to managed youth development facilities.

SUPPORT
Each rink has a steel dasherboard system, sports court and is enclosed by a cyclone fence. A Project Power Play start-up kit that includes basic skills and game instructions will be provided, along with manuals. Planning and developing skill sessions, instructions and scrimmage games will be coordinated by Penguins staff. The Penguins will provide ongoing support for the facilities.

Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Kicks Off PensFIT Program

Penguins Broadcaster & Alumnus Phil Bourque Delivers
Floor Hockey Equipment to Bethel Park Middle School

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins’ broadcaster and alumnus Phil Bourque will kick-off the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s PensFIT program when he delivers the first set of floor hockey equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park on Friday, November 9 at 2:00 pm.

PensFIT is a 3-year Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation initiative which is designed to introduce children to the sport of hockey and facilitate an increase in physical activity by supplying elementary and middle schools with complete sets of floor hockey equipment. The equipment will be used in physical education classes.

Over the next three years, the program will encompass over 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties and will benefit over 187,000 students.

This year, over 250 qualifying schools in Allegheny County will receive free all-inclusive sets of floor hockey equipment. In addition to equipment, the Foundation will supply everything that a school needs to sustain a quality floor hockey program including student work books, instruction manuals and a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for each of the school’s physical education teachers, hosted by the Penguins coaching staff and members of the team’s alumni.

In the second year of the program, schools will be added from the surrounding counties.

Each set of equipment retails for over $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and storage bag. The program will also provide teacher training, instruction and supplemental materials for the schools.

“We’re in tough budget times across the state and this kind of contribution really makes a difference,” stated Dr. Dorothy Stark, Principal in the Bethel Park School District.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is committed to encouraging children to embrace physical activity through the PensFIT program. In recent years, childhood obesity has skyrocketed among America’s youth. The PensFIT initiative is geared towards reinforcing to students the importance of exercising and developing a commitment to lifelong physical activity.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground who will provide the shipping of all equipment to the schools free of charge.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation continues to develop programs which are designed to introduce children to the sport of hockey and facilitate an increase in physical activity. Beginning with the 2012 school year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will launch PensFIT. PensFIT is designed to provide free street hockey equipment to qualifying elementary schools (both public & private) in Allegheny County. In addition to providing the equipment, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and CALU, have teamed up to design a street hockey curriculum for implementation into the physical education classrooms, which will also be simultaneously suitable for use in community recreation center programs. In addition to a professional curriculum, the program will provide teacher training, instruction and supplemental materials, and include continuing education sessions featuring Penguins coaches and alumni. The program is funded from the proceeds of the recent sale of Civic Arena ornaments.

The PensFIT program impacts numerous schools throughout Allegheny County. Over 250 schools have committed to the program so far.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation invites children and parents to join us as we explore the world through the Explorer Series. CONSOL Energy Center is turned into an intimate classroom as 400 to 500 children learn through educational films, demonstrations and hands on activities. Children will be invited to explore and learn about interesting topics in an exciting new environment. The Explorer Series topics include Robotics, Space Exploration and the Environment.

Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation 50/50 RAFFLE

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Penguins Foundation are delighted to help local charities raise funds through the Penguins Foundation 50/50 RAFFLE.

The Penguins Foundation will host a 50/50 RAFFLE at all Penguins home games and one lucky fan will go home with 50% of the collected amount for each game! A majority of the balance will be directed to a selected Charity; the remainder will be distributed by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation to a local 501c3 charity.

A different charity is selected to participate at each game, but all charities share the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s vision to promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education, and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through hockey and other activities.

Tickets will be sold at the following rate: 3 for $5, 7 for $10, and 15 for $20.

Please look for our distinctive 50/50 RAFFLE kiosks and roaming sellers around the CONSOL Energy Center. Charity volunteers wearing bright green aprons can be found at CONSOL Energy Center main entrances and at kiosks on each concourse. Tickets will be sold from the time gates open until the end of the 2^nd intermission.

One winning 50/50 RAFFLE ticket will be randomly drawn by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation utilizing an automated computer program during the second timeout of the 3^rd period during each Pittsburgh Penguins home game. After the ticket is selected, it will be announced during the game and the winners’ list will be posted on the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation website – pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org – for a period of thirty (30) calendar days after that game. The winner does not need to be present to claim his/her prize.
