Building the Future of Girls’ Hockey in Western Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Pennies program, presented by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and supported by the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund, is a regional initiative designed to increase access, participation, and equity in girls’ hockey. Rooted in the belief that hockey should be for everyone, Pennies programming provides new opportunities for girls ages 6–14 to hit the ice, develop skills, and connect with peers in a fun, supportive environment.

Our Mission

The Pittsburgh Pennies program is committed to:

  • Breaking barriers for girls entering the sport
  • Growing participation at the grassroots level
  • Providing pathways from first skates to competitive play
  • Celebrating community through skills clinics, festivals, and special events

What We Offer

  • Girls’ Clinics & Development Sessions – Age-appropriate hockey instruction led by certified coaches who have experience working with female athletes.
  • Try Hockey for Free Events – Opportunities for first-time players to get on the ice with provided equipment and supportive instruction.
  • Festivals & Community Events – Celebrations of girls’ hockey with clinics, guest speakers, and off-ice activities to inspire the next generation.
  • Resources for Parents & Coaches – Education on development, sports psychology, and creating a positive youth hockey environment.

Why “Pennies”?

The name “Pennies” honors both our city’s hockey tradition and the bright future we see for girls in the game. Each player is a “Penny”—unique, valuable, and part of something bigger. Together, the Pennies form a movement that celebrates community and builds a lasting foundation for the growth of girls’ hockey.
