The Pittsburgh Penguins honored military heroes on Thursday, November 10 at PPG Paints Arena, before and during their 7 p.m. game against the Minnesota Wild (one day before Veterans Day).
The tributes started Thursday morning, when 12 post-9/11 veterans attended the morning skate and had lunch in Suite 66. Each of the 12 veterans received a personalized Penguins jersey from a player following the skate. Among the groups participating were the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania, Team Red White and Blue, The Mission Continues, the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation and PA Serves.
At the game Thursday night, the Penguins reserved one empty seat as a “Seat of Honor” in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, as well as those who continue to serve our country away from home. The seat was located in Section 116, Row X, Seat 11.
Penguins players wore special camouflage jerseys in the pre-game warmup, and the Penguins Foundation is holding an auction featuring the jerseys to benefit the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania. The online auction will run from Thursday November 10 and continue through November 21 at NHL.com.
