PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has awarded the 2016 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship to Central Catholic High School graduate Antonio J. Misiti. The scholarship, valued at $5,000, is co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club.
The Johnson scholarship was created in 1992 and is presented annually to a western Pennsylvania high school senior for academic excellence, community service and for providing leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of their school’s hockey program. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 to qualify for the scholarship.
Misiti, who will attend the University of Dayton this fall, played center/left wing for the Central Catholic varsity ice hockey team and served as a senior alternate captain during the 2015-16 season. During his senior year, he recorded 7 goals and 18 points, leading the Central varsity team to its first appearance at the USA Hockey National Championships.
He captured a variety of honors throughout his hockey career including PAHL Academic All-Star honors, the North Allegheny Scholar Athlete Award and Central Catholic Varsity Ice Hockey Highest GPA recognition. In addition, he was named to the 2015 and 2016 USA Hockey America’s Showcase Team, Mid-American and Team New York as a Central Representative.
Along with his success in hockey, Misiti excelled academically. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club and was selected as one of a few seniors to take part in the school’s mentoring program, My Brother’s Keeper, to work with incoming first year students and help them to make the academic and social transition to Central. He was also recognized as the top AP Chemistry student at Central’s annual Honors Convocation.
Active in his community throughout his high school career, Misiti volunteered as an on-ice instructor for the Mighty Penguins Sled Hockey Organization, served as a Master Altar Server at Saints John and Paul Parish and participated in the LaSallian Ministry After School Programs. He also served as a member of the LaSallian Ministry Executive Board.
In March 2016, Misiti participated in two missionary trips traveling to Nogales, Mexico for the Keynote Border Immersion missionary trip and to Homestead, Florida to take part in a missionary trip to the Centro La Salle educational center to visit with the migrant farm workers and their children.
He is the son of Antonio and Rory Misiti of Pittsburgh, PA. He will attend the University of Dayton this fall to pursue an accounting degree.
