PENGUINS HONOR WHEELING PARK HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE WITH 2018 BOB JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Pittsburgh Penguins honored Wheeling Park High School graduate Brooke McArdle as the 2018 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship winner at Thursday’s game vs Detroit at PPG Paints Arena.  The scholarship, valued at $5,000, is co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Penguins Booster Club.

The Johnson scholarship was created in 1992 and is presented annually to a high school senior for academic excellence, community service and for providing leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of their school’s hockey program.  Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 to qualify for the scholarship.

McArdle, who attends Elmira College, played C/RW for Wheeling Park each year of high school with the Varsity Boys Hockey Team, serving as Assistant Captain for the Patriots her senior year.  She also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Team from 2010 through 2017, capturing the National Championship Bronze Medal in 2010 and 2012.

Brooke amassed 122 career points in her AAA hockey career with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite recording 57 goals and 65 assists from 2013 to 2017.  She also registered a +31 on the ice.  During her varsity career, she received a variety of student-athlete honors including PAHL Academic All-Star honors and PIHL Academic All-Star honors and Scholarship award.

Along with her success in hockey, McArdle excelled academically.  She was a member of the National Honor Society, French National Honor Society and served as the French Club Vice President.

Active in her community, she volunteered as a math tutor, worked at her local soup kitchen, served as a student hockey coach, volunteered with the local sled hockey team for disabled children, and served as a Safety Town Counselor.

She is the daughter of John and Elgine McArdle of Wheeling, WV.  She attends Elmira College where she continues her hockey career and pursues a degree in Business and Legal Studies with a minor in Criminal Justice.  She attained Dean’s List status in her first semester at Elmira with a 3.67 GPA.
