The Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres will celebrate the LGBTQ+ community as they co-host the NHL’s second joint Pride Game on Tuesday, November 16 at PPG Paints Arena at 7:00 PM. This season’s Pride Game is presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The Penguins and Sabres’ Pride Game aims to bring together two cities to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities by sharing stories of inclusion, hope and allyship.
“Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is proud to be a sponsor of this game to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community,” shared Cindy Donohoe, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Highmark and the executive champion of PRIDE, Highmark’s LGBTA employee and business resource group. “From Pittsburgh to Buffalo, Highmark is committed to being open, inclusive, and supportive to all individuals from every background. We will continue to prioritize and value new ideas, different experiences, and fresh perspectives in all of our engagements.”
Players from both teams will tape their sticks for pre-game warmups with rainbow tape and take the ice wearing commemorative pride warm-up jerseys that feature Progress Pride Flag and Pride Game shoulder patches. Pucks used in pre-game warm-ups will also have a distinct colorful design.
The Penguins and Sabres will co-host an online auction featuring autographed Pride jerseys, Pride Tape sticks and nameplates. The auction kicks off on Nov. 16 and runs through Nov. 23 at 12:00 PM. To view the pride auction, visit here.
The Penguins Foundation will also host fundraising opportunities on the concourse during the Pride Game, including the sale of warm-up pucks, Progress Pride Flag patches, Pride Game shirts and UNRL rainbow hats from Jason Zucker’s Give16 campaign.
Pittsburgh’s fundraising will benefit the You Can Play Project, Proud Haven and Persad Center. Penguins President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke and his son, Patrick, helped launch the You Can Play Project in 2012, with the goal of ensuring the safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches and fans. It was founded in honor of the late Brendan Burke, Brian’s son and Patrick’s brother. Burke has purchased a suite to host local LGBTQ+ groups at the Pride Game.
Highmark has donated 250 tickets to the LGBTQ+ community to attend the Pride Game. All fans attending the Pride Game will receive a commemorative Pride Game rally towel courtesy of Highmark. Tickets are available through a special offer here.
