The Penguins Alumni Association is once again offering fans the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors while helping to raise valuable funds for women’s cancer research. Reservations are now available for the 3rd Annual “Cast for a Cure” Fly Fishing Classic at the majestic HomeWaters Club in Spruce Creek, PA on August 19-20, 2021.
Proceeds benefit the Nicole Meloche Memorial Breast Cancer Research Fund at Magee-Womens Research Institute. Created in 2016 by the Penguins Alumni Association, the fund was formed in memory of Nicole Meloche, wife of Gilles Meloche, who worked over 30 years with the Penguins organization as a player, coach and scout. Nicole lost her battle with cancer in 1993.
The Fund supports research on metastatic breast cancer at the Women’s Cancer Research Center (WCRC), with a specific focus on research that will better understand the why and how of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer claims over 40,000 lives every year and the WCRC, a collaboration of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Magee-Womens Research Institute, in partnership with the Penguins Alumni Association, wants to lower those devastating numbers.
A great way to spend the sunny days of summer, the Alumni’s Fly Fishing Classic features the fishing competition and plenty of personal conversations with a host of Pens alumni members including Bryan Trottier, Troy Loney, Kim Clackson and many more. The evening campfire chats have proved to be a highlight of this event!
All participants receive welcome gifts. At the conclusion of competition, prizes are awarded in five different categories including overall individual, overall team, largest Rainbow Trout, Largest Brown Trout and Overall Alumni.
The HomeWaters Club is located in scenic Central PA, and boasts over 30 miles of blue-ribbon streams, perfect for an afternoon of trout fishing. It’s a welcoming atmosphere away from the hustle of everyday city life.
A wide range of sponsorships are still available for the event. For more information or to make a reservation, visit http://mageewomens.org/castforacure.
