The Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association awarded its 19TH annual scholarship to Chartiers Valley High School graduate Luke Hinds. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.
The Alumni scholarship program was created in 2005 and is presented annually to a western Pennsylvania high school senior for academic excellence and for providing leadership, sportsmanship and a positive attitude as a member of their school’s hockey program. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 to qualify for the scholarship.
Hinds, a defenseman, served as a team captain for the Chartiers Valley varsity hockey team during his junior and senior years. He was a 4-year Varsity Letterman, 2023 PIHL All-Star, PIHL Class A Player of the Month (February 2023), PIHL Academic Award every tear, and 2024 Class A Penguin Cup Champion.
Last season, he also played for the South Hills Panthers U18 in the PAHL. During his high school career, he was also a member of the Chartiers Valley Varsity Golf and Track teams.
He excelled academically as well, recording a 4.0 GPA. He was a 4-year member of the Chartiers Valley Showband playing trumpet, a 4-year member of the Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) competing in the Districts competition annually. In addition, he was a member of his school’s National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and worked at the Collier Township Community Center, organizing and coaching a youth dek hockey program.
Hinds was an active member of his community and volunteered with the Southpointe Grizzlies Special Needs Hockey program and the Chartiers Valley Jr. Colts Spring Clinic for elementary school children earning him accolades with the Trib Total Media Outstanding Young Citizen Award for leadership and involvement in the community and school.
He is the son of Michelle Hinds of Oakdale, PA. He will attend Ohio State University to pursue a Business Administration Degree in Finance with a minor in Business Analytics.
